Immigrant crime: A good old British “fudge” again
Wed, 16 Apr 2008 16:35:46 PDT
What no policeman or other official can say in Britain is that the big problem is not with Poles but with blacks. And the “British” population now includes large numbers of blacks. So comparing immgrants overall with the “British” population overall is uninformative. On both sides of the ledger you will have a mixed population of blacks and whites. Comparing crime among immigrant blacks with white British crime, however, would reveal a REALLY alarming situation — which is why no such compari

Over the past year or two, we've been working on a new service for the user experience, and it's now ready for you to use and, more importantly, participate in. It's called UX Zeitgeist, and our goal is to profile the books that the UX community uses, and the books that they want to see published. All it takes is getting a lot of people in the UX community to answer three simple questions. We take your answers and aggregate them with information from a host of other UX-related sites. The resu

Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet

- In this sobering but optimistic manifesto, development economist Sachs (The End of Poverty) argues that the crises facing humanity are daunting -- but solutions to them are readily at hand. The author analyzes economic data, demographic trends and climate science to create a lucid, accessible and suitably grim exposition of looming problems, but his forte is elaborating concrete, pragmatic, low-cost remedies complete with benchmarks and budgets. Sachs's entire agenda would cost less than 3

What’s in a World Record? Well pretty much anything you can think of can be a world record. How about this one — “Backgammon Masters Applies for Guinness Gamer World Record in Farthest Backgammon Dice Toss”. What’s the story here? Lots of talk on data lately. Paul Kedrosky, for example, wants to bring on the data blogs. So in that spirit I wanted to mention some cool data-related sites and APIs and put up some data of my own. Google has its charts API. Swivel and Many Eyes are also familiar to many people who read this blog. To that list I would like to Trendrr, which I first read about on ReadWriteWeb. Haven’t quite tried it out yet, but it definitely looks very interesting. There are a lot of public datasets available
